Excel 97/2000 Viewer: Spreadsheet Files

Note:  The Microsoft Excel 97/2000 Viewer is recommended for use with a stand-alone computer that does not have Microsoft Excel installed. This product allows the user to open and view Excel 97 and Excel 2000 spreadsheet files. The viewer is not suitable for use on a server.

The Microsoft Excel 97 Viewer allows users to view and print Excel 97 and Excel 2000 spreadsheet files, in addition to other Excel for Windows® (versions 2.0 and greater) spreadsheet files. This small, freely distributable viewer gives users the flexibility to view page layout, copy and control cell sizes, and access the zoom and AutoFilter features.

Note:  While this viewer is called the Microsoft Excel 97 Viewer (and is referred to by this name throughout this page), it is important to understand that you are not limited to only viewing Excel 97 spreadsheets.

Microsoft Excel 97 Viewer is built to automatically configure itself as a Helper Application for Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer (it can also be manually configured as a Helper Application for other browsing tools). This allows users to automatically view Microsoft Excel spreadsheets (.xls) that are linked to Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) pages on a local area network (LAN) or the World Wide Web.

Users should copy and distribute Microsoft Excel 97 Viewer to friends and coworkers, or post it onto public electronic bulletin boards, LANs, and Internet sites. This way individuals without Microsoft Excel will have a utility that allows them to view Excel spreadsheets.
